The Scottish
e-Skills Academy has been set up as a National Centre for
the Scottish Business Community to provide innovative training to
individuals and organisations wishing to work in an e-world. The Scottish
Academy is an initiative of the Universities of Strathclyde
and Paisley, together with Falkirk College of Further and Higher Education,
and draws upon over 30 years of combined experience of these institutions

challenges posed by a fast changing environment. The Certification
schemes include those offered from Microsoft, Cisco, Sun, Macromedia,
CIW, and the Institute of Leadership and Management, and are blended
together as required against the priority job roles including;

Getting
Technical
Glasgow Chamber is delighted to be able to offer members a wide
range of technical training to compliment its existing provision
of training and development programmes. This new and exciting initiative
is being delivered by the Chamber in association with Sentia Training,
a company which was established in 2004 from the technical training
arm of Itacs at University of Strathclyde. The Chamber is now able
to offer competitive introductory and advanced training courses
in UNIX and LINUX, Korn Shell Programming, Perl Programming and
Solaris System Administration suitable for system administrators,
engineers, programmers, project managers and database administrators.
Other technical IT courses available include Java, XML, C++, Oracle,
SQL and OO Analysis/Programming. Donald Cameron, founding Director
of Sentia has 16 years of IBM/SUN Accredited experience using a
variety of different applications of UNIX including AIX, HP-UX,
Linux, SUNOS and all versions of Solaris. He recognises that using
UNIX and Linux can generate cost benefits to businesses. "We pride
ourselves on quality and experience of our trainers and have delivered
training services to a diverse range of clients in several sectors
including local government, software, financial, engineering and
education. All of our trainers have full training certifications,
real-world experience in their technical field and most importantly
the enthusiasm to impart this knowledge to the students." Glasgow
Chamber welcomes this association with Sentia Training and IBM Learning
Services to deliver their IT training courses. Chief Executive,
Dr.Leslie Sawers said "This is an excellent opportunity to provide
a whole new range of training to compliment the Chamber's existing
programmes and to support the requirements of our members." |

Responding to
SME's needs
The arrival of Linux in the late 1990s provides a notable example
of how a disruptive technology emerges, evolves, and eventually finds
its way into the mainstream. Somewhere between Linux adherent's vision
of an Open Source future and Microsoft's propriety hold on commercial
desktop software lay the practical realities of building momentum
around a new business technology platform which is Linux. The challenge
of growing business is well understood by every business. Add to this
complexity and relative novelty of eBusiness and many a company may
find itself mired in technological details and costs that may suggest
that potential risks outweigh possible benefits. This is where expertise
of IBM and IBM Business Partners can make the difference between thriving
in new market opportunities and getting lost along the IT migration
pathway. Financial personnel should take note that migrating to Linux
can afford SMEs substantial cost savings over proprietary alternative
applications. Linux can be installed on platforms from numerous vendors,
which provides greater flexibility in migration costs while mitigating
concerns regarding hardware lock-in overtime. In addition Linux can
also be deployed on under-utilised hardware, thus granting the SME
even greater flexibility. In addressing the needs of business, Glasgow
Chamber in cooperation with Sentia Training has teamed with IBM to
be IBM's Authorised Training Partner for Scotland offering Linux and
AIX training alongside change management and project management for
companies wishing to migrate to lower-cost structure business solutions.
