Course Description: This course is aimed at users who want to get the most out of UNIX. It provides training in key topic areas for participants with some existing programming experience and basic UNIX competence. Although attendance on the Chamber of Commerce UNIX Essentials Part One course is not an obligatory prerequisite for this advanced course, participants will have to have reached a similar level of competence.
       
What You Will Achieve: After completing this course participants will be able to:
- use and appreciate the Korn shell-convenience mechanisms
- use hard-links and symbolic links
- appreciate the use of special file and directory permission
- utilise complex regular-expression patterns
- archive user data
- use find to search for files
- use awk for data-file processing.
       
Who Should Attend: UNIX operators, system and application support staff.
       
Pre-Requisites: This course is fast paced, and participants must have:
- basic competence in UNIX or attended the Essentials UNIX - Part 1 course
- ability to login and manage files and directories
- knowledge of file and directory permissions
- understanding of shell redirection and pipes
- proficiency in one commonly available UNIX text editor such as vi
       
Course Content: Modules on: Korn Shell Features, Korn Shell Quoting, Korn Shell Variables, Shell Initialisation Files, Hard and Symbolic Linking, Advanced File Permissions, Searching through Files using Grep,
Searching the File System Using The Find command, Managing Processes, Introduction to Awk.
